Q.) Is it permissible for a Muslim lady to participate in a segregated ladies only 'keep fit' class where the exercise is done to a background of music. The form of exercise is commonly known as 'aerobics', where a trainer (lady in this case) coordinates the exercise whilst in the background music (without singing) is played.

Is this permissible if the intention is only to take benefit from the exercise. If it is not then is it haram or makrooh? Note that there are no other alternative facilities available for ladies in the locality.

A.) Islam encourages fitness and well-being as a healthy body encourages better Ibadat (devotion) to Allah. However, where fitness exercise program falls against the dictates of Shari'ah, it will not be acceptable and declared prohibited. The aerobics form of exercise is prohibited for the following reasons: a) Background music, b) Unnecessary emergence from the home, c) Indecent clothing, and d) Immodest gyrating before others.

The women should exercise within the confines of the home. Additionally, doing the housework instead of relying on the maid or machinery, is a great way of keeping fit. And Allah Ta'ala knows best
